Using rechargeable and long life batteries

A rechargeable battery, or storage battery, is a cluster of two or more secondary cells. Unlike regular batteries, rechargeable batteries may have to be charged before use. A battery charger is used to transfer energy into a rechargeable battery by way of forcing the electric current through it. Rechargeable batteries are commonly used for portable electronics, electric wheelchairs, golf carts, uninterruptible power supplies, and in many other ways.

There are many types of rechargeable batteries, using different chemical configurations. The most common are nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), nickel cadmium (NiCD), and lithium ion (Li-ion).

A Nimh Battery has two to three times the capacity of an equivalent size nickel cadmium battery. However, compared to the Lithium Battery cell, the amount of energy stored is lower and self-discharge is higher. When fast charging the nickel metal hydride battery it is recommended to charge it with a smart battery charger to avoid overcharging, and you should not use a NiCD charger as a substitute for nickel metal hydride charger.

NiCD or nickel cadmium batteries use nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes. This battery comes in two types; one is sealed and the other is vented. Sealed nickel cadmium batteries can be used individually or can be assembled into packs of two or more batteries. Small types of nickel cadmium batteries are used for portable electronics and toys. NiCD batteries contain cadmium, a toxic heavy metal. They have been banned in the European Union since 2006 except for certain uses and are becoming less popular in the US due to environmental concerns.

The Lithium battery is a type of battery in which a lithium ion moves between anode and cathode. Li-ion batteries are the most common types of batteries used for portable electronics. This type of battery can rupture or ignite when exposed to a high temperature environment, therefore users should be very careful when charging and using this battery.

When buying a battery charger , it is recommended to double check all the features of the charger before purchasing. It is strongly advised that you should also check whether the charger that you are buying is compatible with the battery that you’re using.

Energizer , one of the largest manufacturers of batteries and flashlights in the world, has many different batteries and battery chargers to choose from. One of their most useful chargers for home or office is the Family charger for AA, AAA, C, D and 9 Volt Batteries. This charger charges almost any type of rechargeable batteries in about three to six hours, and automatically shuts off when the batteries are fully charged. It also includes a built in safety timer to avoid overcharge, and detects incompatible batteries.

It is important, no matter which battery you use, to dispose of batteries appropriately. At home and at work, a battery recycling container is a great way to collect batteries for proper disposal.
